Ornithopter
AS/AE | December 21 - 09:00AM
An ornithopter is an aircraft that flies by flapping its wings, mimicking birds and insects. The event has two rounds: a qualifying round, where design quality, flapping power, and aerodynamics are assessed, and a flying test in the second round. The ornithopter with the longest flight endurance wins.
Event Rules
1. Ornithopter must be constructed using balsa wood. 2. Materials such as carbon fiber, Kevlar and boron are not allowed. 3. Metal or plastics may be used in the wing hinges and motor hooks only. 4. Usage of ready to fly kit is strictly prohibited. 5. Batteries can be used to power the ornithopter. 6. The motor stick and the tail boom should consist of a single piece of wood. 7. Only mono plane configuration is allowed to design, that is only a single pair of flapping wing, one on right and other on left. 8. Any stabiliser or lifting surface other than flapping wings must be located aft of the rear motor hook. 9. Joints may be reinforced with tissue paper soaked in glue. 10. Participants can compete individually or in a team of 2-4 participants.
Judging Criteria
The Participants are judged based on: 1. Round 1: Evaluation of design for flapping power and aerodynamic characteristics. 2. Round 2: Flight endurance (time airborne) is measured. 3. Additional points for bird-like decorations (10 seconds added to flight time). 4. Best flight time among three attempts is considered.
